The Aim of the course:
The goals of the course is that provide understanding the importance of burial practices in research of archaeological communities. Showing that studying burial practices of ancient societies might shed light on their view of the death, rituals and belief systems. Using the new theories and methodologies in the research of burial practices.
Course Content:
Concept of death, Tanatology and Archaeotanatology Description of concepts related to death: Afterlife, Spirit, Religion, Concept of God, forms of burial. Intramural and extramural burial forms, body positions. Grave types, distribution in Anatolia through time. Grave contents and their possible meanings. Change in grave goods through time. Burial practices in Neolithic period: Çatalhöyük case. The definition and charecteristics of primary and secondary burials. Evaluation of grave goods in relation to skeletons. Determination of grave structure according to the position of the skeleton (void/filled space). Paleopathology and grave archaeology. Secondary and multiple burials, determination of individuals. What is cannibalism? Archeological indications of cannibalism. Theoretical approaches to archaeology of death. Social Archaeology and a case study.
